Function of decantering centrifuge in oil field:

Decanting centrifuge is ideal choices for separating particles in drilling mud. Decanting Centrifuge separate the suspending fluids using  the principle of centrifugal action, the suspending fluids is pushed into the rotor drum through the inlet pipe and the fluid hole of the spiral feeder. Functions of drilling mud:

Drilling mud is used to control subsurface pressures, lubricate the drill bit, stabilize the well bore, and carry the cuttings to the surface, among other functions.

 

Why solid cutting should be separated from drilling mud:

As the drill bit grinds rocks into drill cuttings, these cuttings become entrained in the mud flow and are carried to the surface. In order to return the mud to the recirculating mud system and to make the solids easier to handle, the solids must be separated from the mud.

How to separate solid cutting from drilling mud:

In order to recycle drilling mud, solids control equipments are used, usually 4 stage solids control equipment used.

1)       First stage: Shale shaker

According to rig size, 1 or 2 or 3 sets shale shaker will be used at the first stage solids control separation.

Usually matched with API 60 or API40 shaker screen.

Cutting over 400µm will be separated in this stage.

 

2)       Desander and desilter is used as the second and third stage separation. For better performance, GN recommend to bear a underflow shaker with desander / desilter.

Some clients may choose mud cleaner for these stages. It is a combination of shake shaker, desander and desilter. But more compact with less space.

 

For smaller size rigs (usually, under 750hp), mud treated by shale shaker and mud cleaner can be used for drilling.

 

3)       In some condition, while drilling depth is big, and high standard mud request, decantering centrifuge will be used as forth stage separation. Finer solids can be separated.

4)       For gas cut drilling mud, vacuum degasser, poor boy degasser and ingnition device will be used.

Slurry Separation for Microtunneling with Decanter Centrifuge Process.

Primary solids removal is accomplished by GNZS853 H G Dryer  with 7.5 G’s of consistent acceleration, outfitted with 0.3mm screens.

After the primary separation, a 100HP centrifugal pump is used to feed three (3) 12” sand separator cones with underflow regulators. Oversized material recovered from the sand separators is fed to another GNZS853 High G Drying Shale Shaker with API-120 mesh openings for further dewatering and discharge into the muck pit.

Because of the size TBM, and the amount of fine solids that could be generated, a GNLW553 big bowl big volume high speed, decanting centrifuge with VFD control was selected to maximize fine solids removal. This unit offers up to 500 GPM and 15-20 t/hr of solids removal.

How to start-up and stop the decanter centrifuge from GN Solids Control

4.3.1.1.Switch on the decanter centrifuge mains power supply first;

4.3.1.2.Start-up the back motor and see if the motor run well . Start the main motor after the auxiliary motor run in normal for 30 seconds.

4.3.1.3.Start-up the main motor. Pay attention to the running condition of the decanter centrifuge, if any abnormality occurs, stop it promptly, and find out the causes.

4.3.1.4.Open the shunt valve of mud filling pipes, start-up the motor of mud filling pump, supply mud. Pay attention to sand discharging condition of the centrifuge. If no abnormality, regulate the fraction of flowing stream, increase the amount of feeding mud gradually. Split-flow should be done to lighten the load of the centrifuge when discharged sand is too much.

4.3.2    How to Stop the decanter centrifuge?

4.3.2.1.Turn off the motor of mud filling pump, stop feeding mud to the decanter centrifuge.

4.3.2.2.Close the 2″ball valve in feeding pipe; open the flushing valves in feeding pipe and box body, flush for at least 10 minutes

4.3.2.3.Cut off the water supplying valve. Press the button “stop” on the main motor.

4.3.2.4.Press button “stop” on auxiliary motor and cut off the mains after the drum stop rotating completely (Attention: Don’t cut off the mains while the drum rotate in high-speed. It may lead to auxiliary motor’s being damaged because drum may drive auxiliary motor to rotate in over-speed if the mains is cut off at the moment!!)

The GN Vertical Cutting Dryer uses centrifugal force to dry drilled solids in oil or synthetic base fluids. A stainless steel screen bowl traps “wet” solids and accelerates them up 900RPM with G force up to 420. Liquid is forced through the screen bowl openings, while “dry” solids are extracted by the angled flights attached to the cone, which rotate slightly slower than the bowl. Tungsten carbide protects the flights from abrasive solids and ensures long operational life. This aids in maintaining a constant gap between the scroll and screen bowl, which is crucial for proper operation. Most water-based muds (WBMs) are disposed of when the drilling job is finished. In contrast, many oil-based muds (OBMs) and synthetic-based muds (SBMs) cuttings are recycled when possible.
