In 2012 GN developped the first Generation Vertical Cuttings Dryer,As the first API certified company in China,After field testing and customer’s feedback, GN Solids Control now developed the second Generation Vertical Drilling Cuttings Dryer.GN second Generation Vertical Cuttings Dryer is used for OBM and SBM to get drying cuttings with oil below 5% even to 3%, and recovery oil for drilling fluids system.

For getting oil on cuttings to below 3%, waste management company normally use the Thermal deporption unit (TDU)

Thermal desorption is an ex-situ treatment technology that utilizes heat to increase the volatility of contaminants such that they can be removed from a solid matrix: typically, soil, sludge, filter cake, or drill cuttings. Desorbers are designed as a separation technology to remove organic compounds from such matrices without thermally destroying them. The volatilized contaminants are then either collected or thermally destroyed in secondary treatment units. A thermal desorption system therefore has two major components; the desorber itself and the off-gas treatment system.

How to choose suitable speed centrifuge

Decanter centrifuge is a high efficient equipment used for solids control and drilling waste mangement. Many customer, they are wondering how to choose the suitable decanter centrifuge model for their applications. Some customer thought, the big speed, the higher. It is not correct. Some customer believe Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) high speed centrifuge can cover all the speed and G force, it is the best choice. Actually, it is not correct for all conditions.

Below some Question and Answers between customers and the decanter centrifuge manufacturer. It may help you for some understanding.
Q 1. We prefer GNLW363 VFD high speed decanter centrifuge, the highest international standard. The speed adjust from 0~3200rpm, but in case of no VFD we need it to work only with 1400rpm.

Answer from GN: GNLW363 centrifuge is mainly for high speed. We only recommend If you are mainly running at lower speed, we recommend GLW452. It is a 18inch decanter centrifuge, with bigger capacity, better price. GNLW452 is a middle speed centrifuge, normally 1800rpm, GN can mach VFD panel for 0~1400rpm per customers request.
For heavy mud, 452 centrifuges is the best choice to used with solids control equipment to reduce the weight. It is widely used for barite recovery (high gravity separation).
Q2: How can we get fixed speed control for VFD centrifuge?
Answer from GN: Normal, the only VFD control for VFD centrifuge, if customer need both VFD and fixed speed control, you can choose an extra Hydraulic Coupling & Fixed speed control panel. The Fixed speed control panel can be separatedly, or design together with the VFD panel, whichever you like.
Q3: How do services and change of parts happen during guaranty period and who is responsible for doing it after commissioning?
Answer from GN: GN company will send engineer for first time commissioning and training if request by customer. Customer can also send engineer to GN China base for training. For normal parts changing and some small questions after first time commissioning, GN will offer long-distance instruction. If your engineer cannot solve with long-distance instruction, GN can send engineer to jobsite for support.
Q4: We want a centrifuge mostly running around 3200 and 1400rpm, which decanter centrifuge model suitable?
Answer from GN: GNLW363 fixed speed is suitable. We can offer you 2 sets pulley with belt for 2 fix speed. You only need to change pulley and belt to get another speed.
Q5: Do we need to stop the centrifuge while changing pulley and belt for another fixed speed?
Answer from GN: Yes, indeed. You have to stop the centrifuge decanter and when it is stable, you remove the pulley and belt on the machine and change for another set.

Low pressure / high pressure mud gun

Low pressure / high pressure mud gun is used for mud tanks usually together with mud agitator. It is used as an assistant of mud agitator.

Drilling mud agitator usually mounted in the middle of the tank compartment to agitating mud and prevent it from settle down. But at corners of mud tank, agitator impeller cannot effect. In this case mud gun used.

Applications of mud gun

Drilling fluids mud gun can be powered by centrifuge pump, mostly mixing pump, it is called low pressure mud gun. Dud gun in rig system can also be powered by mud gun with high pressure. Mostly, only high pressure or low pressure will be used in one system, but in some mud system, customer will prefer both high pressure and lower pressure.

Sizing and model selection of mud gun

The number of mud gun depends on the size of tank. Usually mud gun installed with mud line of mud tank. According the inlet pipe size, there are 2’ mud gun and 3’ mud gun for option. According to different structure feature, there are two types of mud gun: fixed mud gun , and rotary mud gun.

The mud gun in the mud system can also be used for transfer mud from compartment to compartment, like for trip tank compartment.GN Mud Guns are available for rotation adjustment to allow the operator to optimize the mud guns performance. Drilling fluids mud desilter is the 3nd stage solids control equipment. It is usually used after desander. For mud cleaner used for oil and gas drilling field, 4 inch deciliter cone is the most frequency be used. It can remove solid particle around 30~70 microns.

Main part of drilling fluids mud desilter is the hydrocyclone cone (desitler cone). It is a kind of pressure device. The separation process is carried out by employing centrifugal forces. Under pressure, drilling fluid with solid particles will flow into the mud desilter cones, after high rotation, bigger and heavier particle will be threw to cone wall, then slide down till drop in apex and separated out. Clean fluids will be moved out from cone top port. So, there will be 2 rotary gas flow in the drilling fluids mud desilter cone, one is liquid contains quantity big solid flow down as cyclone, the other is smaller solid mixed with gas go up as bow wave.

The angle of the fluid entry has been specifically designed to facilitate the flow and separation. The Cones are made of high durameter polyurethane with optional steel inserts, which ensure consistent productivity.
Desilter Cones remove fine sand and silt down to 30 microns.
Desilter Cones are available of 4″ size that have a 2″ inlet and a 2″ outlet.

Usually, the oil on cuttings (OOC) of waste drilling cuttings will be around 20~25%. After treatment of Vertical cuttings dryer, it can be reduced to 3% ~5%. In most countries, it can be discharged directly with this dryness. After the Vertical cuttings dryer, there usually a decanter centrifuge followed to further treat the recovered drilling fluids. GN Vertical Cutting Dryer uses centrifugal force to dry drilled solids in oil or synthetic base fluids. A stainless steel screen bowl traps “wet” solids and accelerates them up to 890RPM with G force up to 420. Liquid is forced through the screen bowl openings, while “dry” solids are extracted by the angled flights attached to the cone, which rotate slightly slower than the bowl. Tungsten carbide protects the flights from abrasive solids and ensures long operational life. This aids in maintaining a constant gap between the scroll and screen bowl, which is crucial for Vertical Cutting Dryer proper operation. Touch screen PLC centrifuge operation

1A) As below Display one the PLC controlled Decanter Centrifuge touch screen, we can see 1 start & 1 stop button for centrifuge, 1 start and stop button for pump.

PLC Decanter Centrifuge Auto Model Operation.

1B) The VFD+PLC Centrifuge have two Mode, one is Auto Mode, if we choose Auto Model, first we set the Centrifuge Bowl speed, and Differential Speed, then press Decanter Centrifuge Start Button , The PLC will control to start the back motor first, and main motor, later we press the pump start Button, the pump will run until to the max capacity the centrifuge can handle.

1C) As set in the PLC, we can only start the Decanter Centrifuge start button to run the back drive motor first, second the main motor, finally the pump motor. If we do not follow the order of the starting, to protect the centrifuge, the pump motor will not start even we press the pump start first.

1D) Once the centrifuge is in overload, the PLC will stop the pump, and later stop the main motor, finally, stop the back drive motor.( This is present program in the PLC)

But for 1D) we can updated the PLC decanter centrifuge to following.

 1D Updated) Once is in overload, the PLC will slow down the pump to lower down the pump capacity to the centrifuge max capacity, if the centrifuge is still in overload, the PLC will stop the pump, and later stop the main motor and finally the back drive motor.

1E) When we stop the centrifuge, the stop order is: first the pump, later the main motor, finally the back drive motor, if we do not follow the order, the PLC will control not to stop the centrifuge.

Manual Mode Operation of the PLC Decanter Centrifuge

2A) If we run the centrifuge in Manual model, first we set the bowl speed, and set differential speed, and set the pump capacity. When we start, we can only follow the order to press the bowl start and the pump start, if not, no motor will start.

2B) In the manual mode, if we stop the centrifuge, it is the same like 1E). the stop order is: first the pump, later the main motor, finally the back drive motor, if we do not follow the order, the PLC will control not to stop the centrifuge.

2C) In the manual mode, if the centrifuge is in overload, the PLC will stop the pump, and later stop the main motor, finally, stop the back drive motor.( This is present program in the PLC)

But for 2C) we can updated to following.

 2C Updated) Once is in overload, the PLC will slow down the pump to lower down the pump capacity to the centrifuge max capacity ,if the centrifuge is still in overload, the PLC will stop the pump, and later stop the main motor and finally the back drive motor.

Moreover, For option, we can choose to install the temperature sensor for the bearings, and vibration sensor for the PLC Decanter Centrifuge. If the bearing increasing temperature is higher than 50C° the centrifuge will stop automatically. And if the vibration is higher than the standard, the PLC Decanter centrifuge will stop automatically. But this will be higher cost.
