There are three types of decanter centrifuge widely used in drilling field:
1. Small centrifuges – the diameter is less than 14 inch (355mm,356mm) and its volume capacity is 10 – 100 gpm (2.3-22.7 cubic meters).
2. Medium centrifuges – the diameter is around 15-16 inch (381mm,406mm) and its volume capacity is 30 – 150 gpm (6.8-34.1 cubic meters).

The use of thermal desorption technology or thermal desorption units (TDUs) to recover oil from drill cuttings has been well documented in the industry  and a detailed study of all available technology and processes was published by Halliburton in 2004.3

In summary, thermal desorption of oil from drilling cuttings for environmentally acceptable disposal of the cuttings was identified as an option in the early 1990s. The technology used for this purpose evolved significantly in the intervening years. In Europe and South America, the processed cuttings typically measure less than 1% of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) before disposal in landfills and this was the target selected for the subject project.

Regulatory agencies in other areas have also set standards for the levels of TPH in cuttings prior to disposal or discharge to the environment. Some processes do not require thermal desorption technologies. For example, in the Gulf of Mexico the discharge of cuttings with TPH levels of either 6.9% or 9.4% by weight, depending on the synthetic oil selected, is allowed if other toxicity and biodegradation standards are met or exceeded.

These levels of oil on cuttings can be attained with mechanical systems. However, the trend in environmental regulations is toward greater stringency and therefore an increased demand for minimal TPH levels in treated cuttings will drive the development of more oil-removal technologies.

All thermal desorption processes evaporate the oil and water from the cuttings. The heat required to evaporate the oil and water provides enough energy to remove and separate emulsified oil as well. Free and emulsified oil and water are removed by distillation, and in the process, water evaporates first to produce steam. Oil has a higher boiling point and evaporates after the water. The production of steam can also assist in lowering the boiling point of oil.

The goal is to produce oil-free (or ultra-low TPH) solids for disposal by distilling off oils from the cuttings and recovering oil to be re-used for drilling fluid.

Each horizontal drilling project is unique, with its own set of challenges. Sometimes these challenges relate to logistics, such as site layout or accessibility. Other sites may present challenges related to a difficult bore profile or infrastructure that complicates navigation. Still others required careful planning and preparation to work within strict administrative rules or regulations. Finally, and generally most significantly, some sites pose challenges imposed by the geology or lithology of the formations to be drilled. Each site has the potential to present a combination of these challenges, particularly those associated with geological conditions.

Then back to the question, how to choose a compact HDD mud system. Firstly, if you know a professional HDD mud system company, no such question, ask them for a proposal. GN Solids Control usually is a good choice.

In Australia, usually a HDD drilling company will hire one HSE consultant or have one HSE engineer to take part in all process.

As far as we know in Singapore, Hongkong, America, and so on, have special requirements about HSE.

As list in the checklist for HDD in HSE (UK), One important part is: Suitable and Sufficient Risk Assessments and safe system of work developed, Site-specific authorised Permit to drill, Method Statement, Plant Electrical Earthing arrangements satisfactory, site communication arrangements.

Waste and pollution management approaches can be described as strategies. Solids control- drilling mud system is one part of it. At the municipal level these strategies traditionally have relied on disposal practices (predominantly landfilling and incineration), whereas industry has employed intermediate steps of treatment and stabilization of the more hazardous wastes.
Industry strategies are based on end-of-pipe treatment technologies, which are more appropriately referred to as control strategies, meaning their aim is really to control emissions and wastes to within legally allowable limits of discharge. Both strategies have two disadvantages:
1. They require ongoing costs that are associated with operations and maintenance and with use of energy, and they carry many hidden and indirect costs and liabilities.
2. Releases of infectious, toxic, and hazardous components to the environment continue for many years, posing long-term health risks to the public and endangerment to the environment simply because waste forms are only transformed and not entirely eliminated or completely immobilized.
Waste/pollution management strategies based on prevention strive to eradicate both of the above disadvantages because they eliminate the pollution or waste at the source. They tend to be only partially successful in reducing the first isadvantage because in a number of cases, P2 strategies rely on technology investments which have OM&R (operation, maintenance, and repair costs) as well as other ongoing costs (e.g., labor, energy). But in general, when properly implemented, they are more cost effective than disposal and treatment technologies. Minimization strategies tend to reduce the risks associated with the second disadvantage, but may also offset some of the costs and liabilities noted with the first disadvantage. It comprises 2 GNPS703 shale shaker for primary screening, and a GNPJ703 mud cleaner complete with two 10″ de-sander cones and 12 deisilter cones for de-sanding and de-silting. All these equipments are mounted one tank to save space. Usually 12meters long with 26 cubic meters net storage.

Although the presence of methane has been known ever since coal mining began, separate commercial production of CBM is a relatively recent step. This commenced in the USA in the 1970’s, and exploration for CBM in Australia began in 1976 in Queensland’s Bowen Basin when Houston Oil and Minerals of Australia Incorporated drilled two unsuccessful wells. In February 1996 the first commercial CMM operation commenced at the Moura mine in Queensland methane drainage project (then owned by BHP Mitsui Coal Pty Ltd). In the same year at the Appin and Tower underground mines (then owned by BHP Pty Ltd) a CMM operation was used to fuel on-site generator sets (gas fired power stations). The first stand alone commercial production of CBM in Australia commenced in December 1996 at the Dawson Valley project (then owned by Conoco), adjoining the Moura coal mine.
