The purpose of the mud recycling system is to remove the large size solid particles in the drilling mud by several separation machines. In regards to the mud recycling system for piling project, it could be a very compact design as separation process is not so complex as that for oil gas drilling. Strictly speaking, the mud recycling system used in piling should be called de-sanding unit as the drilling depth is normally shallow and most of the solid particles are sand. A de-sanding unit would be enough for processing the separation to get the expected reusable drilling mud.
GN’s de-sanding unit is a compact structure 2 steps separation system. The main equipment in this de-sanding
unit is combined with a 2 layers shaker and cyclone manifold. The double layers shaker is used for coarse solids separation by the under layers and the upper layer screen is for drying the slurry discharged from the cyclone unit. The tank under the shaker unit is used to store the drilling mud. One centrifugal pump is installed in the system for transferring the mud to the cyclone unit for sand separation.
This de-sanding unit could be connected with extra mud tank for larger capacity mud storage. The operators can also equip a jet mixing unit to make an self-contained mud recycling system for other drilling project like HDD and water drilling.

Working principle of the mud recycling system for water well drilling is same as the mud system for oil gas drilling. Removing the cuttings, sand and silt in the drilling fluids to make the drilling fluids reusable is the purpose of the mud recycling system.

Compact Mud System

Shale shaker is always the first stage equipment for solids control; it could remove the coarse cuttings in the drilling fluids. Shale shaker is the only one equipment by separating the solids hundred percent by the size of the particles. The screen could remove out the solid particles larger than the wire mesh openings. By adjusting the G force and the shaker deck angle, the operator could adjust the dryness of the discharged solids.
De-sander and de-silter could be called hydrocyclone unit. Same as the decanter centrifuge, hydrocyclone separates solid and liquid by using centrifugal force. Density difference is the main factor should be considered if the hydrocyclone unit would be applied.
Mud system for water well drilling is designed compact structure. As per the treating capacity, the corresponding equipment with same capacity would be installed in the system. For different drilling depth, the nos. of the mud tanks are various in different mud system.
Not all the shale shaker, de-sander or de-silter would be used in one mud system. GN ever made a mud recycling for a water well drilling project. For shale shaker application – when the unit is used as primary shale shaker, it is located at the very beginning of the mud system. As we know, the shale shaker unit has buffer box for mud feeding into the shaker unit. The mud overflow out from the buffer box would flow into the upper shaker screen panels with coarse screen for larger size solids separation. The lower screen panels would be much finer for small solids separation. Double layer shale shaker will have a relative larger capacity; in the meanwhile, it can remove out smaller
solids.
For Mud Cleaner application – Shale shaker can also be used as underflow drying shaker by combining with hydro cyclone unit. This type mud cleaner functioned as both shale shaker and cyclone unit. The lower screen with coarse mesh is for larger solids separation, and the upper screen with fine mesh is for drying the slurry discharged from the cyclone.
GN now has main two models of double layers shale shaker. One is coming from the shaker model of GNZS703. Its deformation GNZS706 double layer is for larger capacity shaker and GNZS705 for mud cleaner unit. The other is GNZS752; it can be upgraded to GNZS753 double layers. These double layer shale shakers are widely used in GN’s compact design mud recycling/de-sanding unit for area limitation project.

Most of the horizontal directional drilling mud system is not equipped with decanter centrifuge unit as by using the 3-phase separation system including shale shaker, de-sander and de-silter unit, it can work good enough for removing the solids from drilling fluids. Centrifuge is relative high cost, which is also a reason the drilling contractor doesn’t equip it in the mud system.

However, for some high request drilling condition, the driller may use the heavy mud for better drilling performance. Sometimes the drillers add the certain chemicals to make the drilling mud heavier so that the mud can better protect the wall of the drilling hole. If the driller went to drill another well, the heavy chemicals need to be separated, and then the centrifuge could be used to do this job. In some other conditions, after many times recycling of the drilling mud, there is much ultra fine solid particles that cannot be removed by the shaker and cyclone unit, and then the centrifuge unit is needed.

When transport the mud system, the shaker and decanter centrifuge units could be removed by lifting the frame for fast disassemble. Generally a solids control system will have all the 4 stages separation equipment for drilling cuttings and fluids. However, not all the equipment would have to be used when drilling. Hence, it will be better to design an overflow line for the drilling fluids on the mud tank to let the drilling fluids could flow bypass the equipment will not be used in some specific process.
In generally condition, the overflow line is designed as a U type slot on one side of the mud tank top. It is starting from the sand trap compartment of the mud tank to at least the suction tank where the high pressure mud pump could suck the active drilling fluids and transfer to the rig. As per customers’ requirements, this overflow line could extend to the drilling fluids mixing tank and storage tank.

Shale shaker, de-sander, de-silter and decanter centrifuge are seen as the 4 stages of solids control equipment which can finally separate out the cuttings with size down to 2-5 microns. With the rich experience on solids control management and job working, some customers came to GN Solids Control and talked about their idea to build a drilling mud system which could be easily transported and all equipment could be operated and repaired indoor. What they preferred are two options: Containerized and Frame Supported.

For the containerized design, all the equipment would be located inside a container or a same size mud tank, which is completely closed and with doors for operator in and out. The advantages of this design the all operation would be completed indoor, especially for some area with bad climate condition. With air conditioner installed inside the container, winter to prevent cold and summer avoid hot sun. On the other hand, this containerized design may not have sufficient space left for the operator to move do maintenance job freely. For the big size equipment, it is also difficult to be put into the container. Once GN provided Russia customer 2 units containerized drilling waste cuttings management system. To lift out the huge cuttings dryer out from the container, the container was opened a door on top and use a crane to get the rotation part of the dryer out.

For the frame supported idea, the solids control equipment like shale shaker and decanter centrifuge would be installed in a strong steel frame, the frame size is same with standard container. When assemble the system, the equipment could be easily positioned. For the operation and maintenance, there is enough space as there will be walkways surrounded the frame. The operator could make a thick canvas cover to cover the whole system to make it a closed unit.

Both the containerized and frame supported system are easy for transportation as no equipment need to be disassembled before moving. The frame is design same fixing point with the container that makes the system trailer available.

How many pipeline channels needed for mud mixing

As we know, the processing of mud mixing is consisting of mud suction from every mud tank compartment in the system and again pumping the mud back. There we will know we need design 1 mud suction line and 1 mud mixing line. Both of these 2 pipelines would be laid to each compartment for mud storage. Under the centrifugal force of the mixing pump, the mud would be sucked to the mud mixer unit; here the mud chemicals would be added into the mud and get to the mud tank for fully mixing with the flow of mud through the mud mixing pipeline. In order to produce the sufficient pressure for driving the mud, the inlet of the pump is larger than outlet. Accordingly, the mud suction line diameter is bigger than the mixing pipeline.

What is the location of the mud mixing pipeline inside the tank

Due to different functions of the mud suction line and mixing line, the location of the 2 pipelines are different either. For the suction line, to make sure it would be maximally suck the mud inside the tank, it always is designed to locate at the bottom of the mud tank. Thus, even very low liquid level; the pump could suck the mud for mixing. The mud mixing pipeline is connecting with the centrifugal pump outlet with extended steel pipeline which would be located on upper part of inside tank. The mud gets out from the mixing pipeline with high pressure and when dropping down, it would also stirs the existing mud for mixing, here the mud agitator would definitely is the main equipment for mud agitating.
