On the construction site, the worker may use water to wet or mix some construction material. Nowadays, most of the office building has parking area at the ground floor of the building. When the beginning of building, the workers will operate the rotating drilling machine to drill some holes on the ground for piling. This type of drilling will also need water for cooling down the drill bit and take out the drilling cuttings from bottom of the drilling hole.

Solids Removal Unit

GN’s solids removal system is used to separate the solids and liquid. On construction site, it will be used to remove the stone and other large size solid particles from the water. The unit sent to GN’s customer in London was a 2 phase solids control system. The configurations are as below:
1 unit shale shaker with 3-panel screens for primary solids control could remove most of the large size solid particles. The solid particles on construction site would be various from sand, stone, leaves and waste cans. The shaker could remove almost all the coarse particles by using the wire mesh screens.
1 unit decanter centrifuge with speed up to 3200 rpm is used for fine solids separation. GN’s centrifuge is made of excellent material on bowl and screw propeller for long lifetime and easy maintenance.
1 mud storage tank is divided into two compartments for sand trap under the shale shaker and clean liquid collection under the centrifuge. 2 pumps are installed on the tank skid. One of the pump transfers the slurry from sand trap compartment to the centrifuge, another one is used to transfer the liquid out from the tank for reusing.

Most of the horizontal directional drilling mud system is not equipped with decanter centrifuge unit as by using the 3-phase separation system including shale shaker, de-sander and de-silter unit, it can work good enough for removing the solids from drilling fluids. Centrifuge is relative high cost, which is also a reason the drilling contractor doesn’t equip it in the mud system.

However, for some high request drilling condition, the driller may use the heavy mud for better drilling performance. Sometimes the drillers add the certain chemicals to make the drilling mud heavier so that the mud can better protect the wall of the drilling hole. If the driller went to drill another well, the heavy chemicals need to be separated, and then the centrifuge could be used to do this job. In some other conditions, after many times recycling of the drilling mud, there is much ultra fine solid particles that cannot be removed by the shaker and cyclone unit, and then the centrifuge unit is needed.
GN Solids Control has nearly 10 years in fabricating the drilling mud system for HDD projects. This type mud system need to be compact structure and easy for transportation. See the picture in this article, both the de-sander and de-silter unit are equipped with under flow shaker for drying the discharged solids. The shakers used are 2-layer screen design. The bottom layer screen is used as primary shaker and upper layer screen to dry the discharges out from the cyclone units. This design greatly reduces the footprint of the mud system. And all tank top surface equipment are pre-installed on a frame with same base dimension as storage tank. When transport the mud system, the shaker and decanter centrifuge units could be removed by lifting the frame for fast disassemble. With the frame, the equipment could be easily transported by flat bed trailer.

In drilling mud solids control system, pumps are used to transfer the drilling fluids from one machine to another. Submersible slurry pump is one type pump installed vertically on mud tank or mud pit. In GN designed solids control system, this type slurry pump is often used in HDD project and feeding to centrifuge wherever it is used.

GN has standard model of HDD mud system ranging from 200GPM to 1500GPM. All the models are compact structure. The used drilling fluid in this horizontal drilling comes out from the drilling hole and accumulates in a mud pit. It requests a pump to transfer the drilling mud to the mud system. Above picture perfectly shows the how the submersible slurry pump is installed vertically on the mud pit to transfer the drilling mud to the shale shaker in the HDD mud system. As this pump is installed out of the mud system, when making the quote to clients, GN always recommends an independent submersible slurry pump as an option.

In an oil and gas drilling mud system, after treated by the de-silter cyclone, the drilling mud will be pumped to decanter centrifuge for fine solids separation. Vertically installed in mud tank will ensure a larger tank compartment capacity for more drilling mud storage.
GN’s submersible slurry pump is single stage single suction type pump that is usually used to transfer the slurry with larger solids content. There is no bearing and gland seal between impeller and pump body; hence the slurry pump is maintenance-free and high temperature resistance. Submersible slurry pump is an ideal equipment to transfer the mud to centrifuge and HDD shale shaker. Besides, it can also be used to feed the de-sander and de-silter.

Pitless means no need to dig a pit on the ground to collect the drilling cuttings. Nowadays, though the solids control system is widely used in oil drilling, some drillers still dig a mud pit on the ground to collect the drilling waste cuttings discharged out from the primary solids control equipment.
So long as the drilling rig is working, the solids control system has to be working all the time as the used drilling fluids is continuously coming out from the drilling well. With the issue of much strict environment protection regulation, the driller need find a solution to reduce the volume of the discharged drilling cuttings; in the meanwhile, much more drilling fluids could be recovered to reduce the drilling cost. Pitless drilling cuttings disposal system requires a good connection between the traditional solids control system and waste cuttings management system. The most important is there should be a final solution on how to make the discharges environmental friendly. For the waste cuttings out of the shale shaker and cyclone unit, no matter water base or oil base. We have the high G force drying shaker and vertical cutting dryer unit to make the cutting much dryer so that more drilling fluids could be recovered. The recovered drilling fluids would be pumped
to a high speed centrifuge for separation of fine solids in the drilling fluids. After treated by the centrifuge, the drilling fluids would flow back into the storage tank for drilling reuse. The screw conveyor is used to transfer the drilling cuttings from shaker unit to the cuttings dryer machine. Therefore, it is no need to dig a mud pit, or at least, a large and deep mud pit on the ground to collect the drilling cuttings. We nearly realize
the pitless before the final disposal of the dry cuttings.
There are Thermal Desorption Unit and solidification unit could be used to dispose the cuttings from the high G force drying shaker and Verti G dryer. These 2 systems could make the cuttings none hazardous for environment. Finally, the pitless drilling cuttings disposal system is established.

A normal 1500HP oil drilling rig developed with a 350 t hook load capacity for medium deep wells. Every aspect of rig operation from mobility and deployment to machine and structural design has benefited from a wide array of improvements that maximize safety while minimizing the time for rig-up/down and transport. An integrated hydraulic system is connected to raise the mast and the substructure. When the substructure is in the lowered position, the mast is connected to the drill floor. The mast is raised by two hydraulic cylinders. When the mast is in the vertical position then the hydraulic cylinders are disconnected and retracted. Two telescoping cylinders now lift the substructure into operational height.

This system contains a shale shaker, two centrifuges. The problems delivered to us is: deep subway, have mining water, having mixtures, different particles, which will destroys the pump which usually keep pumping the lakes and rivers out to keep it able to perform there. The pump is created in German, good quality, but expensive, we want to keep it within good condition, and not easy to get repalcement parts. To sum up, we need another technique to make the pump running properly.

The material of this machine body is PP. At each compartment, there is installed one automatic agitator with stainless steel made agitating shaft and impeller. The chemicals feed hopper is also made of SS304.

In order to realize the continuously mixing, the tank compartments are installed with liquid level control device. The mixing, maturing and storing process continuously transfer with low labor cost. The Configuration of GN Drilling Waste Cuttings Drying System

First Stage separation: GN’s drilling waste cuttings drying system mainly includes 2 modules, in which the first module is the vertical cuttings dryer system. The cuttings dryer model of GNCD930 is designed with fixed speed and variable speed. The cuttings with size larger than 250 microns could be removed by the screen located inside the dryer bowl. By using the material of stainless steel, the screen would have better features of anti-corrosion. With the air knife and flushing system on the cover of the dryer, the dryer could consistently for longer time without blocking on the screen. The super high speed of 1200RPM could produce the G-force of 750. If application for the oil based drilling cuttings, the oil content could be reduced down to 3-5 percent.

Second Stage Separation: The fluid going through the screen opening of the cutting dryer would be fed into the high speed decanter centrifuge series of GNLW363CG with working RPM of 3200. Here, the solids down to 2 microns could be separated out.

In this system, both the cuttings dryer and decanter centrifuge have fixed speed and variable speed models for option which could meet the customer’s request for different drilling mud conditions. GN’s VFD control panel is PLC smart design with visual and touchable screen for easier operation.

For this system, we also provide the feeding pump system. And as per customer’s option, GN could also provide the cuttings delivery system screw conveyor for feeding and discharge.

The customer could choose to locate the decanter centrifuge on the telescopic frame or catching tank. That is also the difference between the model of GNCM40-A and GNCM-40B. The GNCM-40A is to put the centrifuge on the telescopic frame with the height adjustable, the discharged clean liquid would pipeline manifold guiding to other catching tank. While the GNCM-40B is self with the catching tank beneath the decanter centrifuge, the liquid could be stored in the catching tank and wait for pumped to reuse.

GN drilling waste cuttings drying system is an excellent solution to make the cuttings dry so as suitable for transportation. And it maximally recovers the drilling liquid to reduce the drilling cost.
