It is known that the drilling project need a drilling fluids recycling system, or we call it mud recycling system. Before start drilling, we need get the mud recycling system ready. On the other hand, we need the drilling fluids to be ready. The drilling fluid is a mixture of water/oil and some mud materials like barite, bentonite, and some other chemical agents. Among the various mud materials, the bentonite is the most important one and the consumption is quite big. Meanwhile, the bentonite is also a polymer which is difficult to solve into the drilling mud base.

Then how should we resolve this problem? Bingo! We need a shear pump. Thanks to the special design of the impeller, the shear pump could cut the polymer into very small pieces so that these materials could solve into the water easily. A high efficiency shear pump could make the consumption of bentonite reduce 30%. Oh my god! Really a large cost saving.

This is not the only advantage to use a shear pump to cut the polymers. Once the drilling started, the solids control equipment will also start running. When the used drilling fluid comes out from the well whole and flow into the shale shaker, the mud recycling process is beginning. If there is much long strips material in the drilling fluids, the screen will be blocked which leads to loss of polymers.
One thing the drilling fluids engineers need pay attention is the shear pump cannot run without fluids inside the pump. As you know, the shear pump is use centrifugal type pump, it need run with liquid to reduce centrifugal force so that the fluids can be transferred continuously. One more, the shear pump cannot be used to transfer used/active mud, as the cuttings in the used mud will definitely damage the pump parts.

A normal 1500HP oil drilling rig developed with a 350 t hook load capacity for medium deep wells. Every aspect of rig operation from mobility and deployment to machine and structural design has benefited from a wide array of improvements that maximize safety while minimizing the time for rig-up/down and transport. An integrated hydraulic system is connected to raise the mast and the substructure. When the substructure is in the lowered position, the mast is connected to the drill floor. The mast is raised by two hydraulic cylinders. When the mast is in the vertical position then the hydraulic cylinders are disconnected and retracted. Two telescoping cylinders now lift the substructure into operational height.

1. GNZY753-4N shaker and de-silter composition unit which has the functions for first stage primary solids separation and second stage for drying the solid discharged from the 4” cyclones. This unit has a top located buffer box for well back drilling mud feeding, the bottom layer screen of this unit remove the coarse solids, liquid goes through the mesh screen opening and gets down to the storage tank. Pumped by a 15hp centrifugal pump, the liquid was transferred to the de-silter cone for fine solids removing. The upper layer screen with much finer opening would block and separate out the finer solid cuttings.
2. GNSLM20A-110 Jet mud mixer is used for adding the mud chemicals and re-configuration of the drilling mud. The beneath located mud tank was divided into 2 compartments and one of them is used for mixing and storing the active drilling mud. The mixing pump adopted is same with the one for feeding to de-silter cones. That would be much easier for future maintenance and parts replacement. The mixing pump could also be used as discharging pump for transferring the active mud to the rig.

High speed decanter centrifuge GNLW223 which is also the key equipment in this solids removal unit. It could run at a typical speed of 3800 RMP that ensure a good performance for dewatering. The semi-dry solids discharged out from the centrifuge unit could be transported easily.

Considering the requirement of the small footprint, this solids removing unit is designed structure compact and the mud tank only has 2 compartments separately to be used for sand settling and mud mixing. The centrifuge pump used in this system could both transfer the mud to centrifuge and mud mixing. This dual function centrifugal pump saves great power cost and reduces the system size.

The dredging boat is the most used to get the slurry out from the bottom of the river or lake. That is the very first step. Then the slurry would be guided to a pool or tank. There a coarse screen would be located to separate the very large size is the slurry like the tree remains, beer cans and something else.
Then the treated slurry would be pumped into a solids and liquid separation system. Simpler than the oil gas drilling mud solids control system, the mud system is designed with the coarse shaker which is fixed with gap screens. As we know, the solid separation is a step by step procedure, after separation by the shaker screen, the slurry would also be fed to the desander unit and desilter unit. After treated by the desilter, the solids with size large than 20 microns would be removed out.
The separation procedure after the desilter is much difficult as the solids is really fine. The operator always need add flocculate agent into the slurry to make a flocculation block which could be easily separate out. A machine with name filter press is always be used to remove the flocculation block out from the slurry. The capacity of the filter press is really small, so, in one project, always several units filter press would be used. The mud cake out from the filter press would be very dry.
In general condition, after separation by the filter press, the water can be guide back to the river and lake.

750 HP rig in China would also be referred as ZJ30 which could drill to depth of 3000 meters. The drilling mud recycling for this rig is configured as below:
4 units’ mud tanks systems include 1 recycling tank, 2 active mud storage tanks and 1 mixing tank. On the first tank for sand trap, there is also a compartment used for trip tank. When the drilling pipe need to be pulled out and changed, the drilling mud in the trip tank compartment would be pump back to the drill hole for protecting the well wall and keep stable downhole pressure.
This mud recycling system is a 3 stages design with shale shaker, mud cleaner (de-sander & de-silter). 2 units of GNZS703E-HB shale shaker have the total capacity of 240 cubic meters. The customer could adjust the feeding rate to each of the shaker by getting a flow divider. 1 unit of mud cleaner is with 2 pcs 10” de-sander cyclones and 12 pcs 4” de-silter cyclones.
On the mud storage tank, the mud agitators and mud guns would be equipped to prevent the solid particles sedimentation down to the tank bottom. Each tank would be equipped 3 units agitator and mud gun.
This system adopts the 55kw centrifugal pump for transferring the mud to the hydrocyclones and the mixing pump is the same model as consideration of future easy maintenance and repaire. The trip tank also is equipped with trip pump for pumping the mud back to the downhole.

For solids control, after treated by the shale shaker, desander, desilter, even the decanter centrifuge. The ultra fine solids particles would be removed out from the drilling mud, and then active mud could be re-used.
The waste cuttings treatment part is functioned to recovery as much as possible the drilling fluids and make the cuttings dry enough for easy transportation to further environmental friendly treatment process. The cuttings out from the solids control shale shaker and desander, desilter would be transferred to drying equipment first. The drying equipment would be different according to water base mud or oil base mud is used. A high G force drying shaker would be better for water base drilling mud cuttings. The Verti G cuttings dryer, e.g. GNCD930 cuttings dryer could be used for both the water base and oil base cuttings drying. The drilling fluids out from the drying equipment would be pump into high speed decanter centrifuge for ultra fine solids separation.
