Solids control- drilling mud system is one part of it. At the municipal level these strategies traditionally have relied on disposal practices (predominantly landfilling and incineration), whereas industry has employed intermediate steps of treatment and stabilization of the more hazardous wastes.
Industry strategies are based on end-of-pipe treatment technologies, which are more appropriately referred to as control strategies, meaning their aim is really to control emissions and wastes to within legally allowable limits of discharge. Both strategies have two disadvantages:
1. They require ongoing costs that are associated with operations and maintenance and with use of energy, and they carry many hidden and indirect costs and liabilities.
2. Releases of infectious, toxic, and hazardous components to the environment continue for many years, posing long-term health risks to the public and endangerment to the environment simply because waste forms are only transformed and not entirely eliminated or completely immobilized.
Waste/pollution management strategies based on prevention strive to eradicate both of the above disadvantages because they eliminate the pollution or waste at the source. They tend to be only partially successful in reducing the first isadvantage because in a number of cases, P2 strategies rely on technology investments which have OM&R (operation, maintenance, and repair costs) as well as other ongoing costs (e.g., labor, energy). But in general, when properly implemented, they are more cost effective than disposal and treatment technologies. Minimization strategies tend to reduce the risks associated with the second disadvantage, but may also offset some of the costs and liabilities noted with the first disadvantage.
When we view the gambit of strategies that are available, a generalized hierarchy based on long-term liabilities or risks associated with waste/pollution management and the costs associated with each becomes apparent. This hierarchy is as follows:
• Prevention – This strategy prevents wastes from ever being formed in the first place.
• Recycling/Resource Recovery/Waste-to-Energy (R3WE) – Recycling and reuse of materials, the recovery of certain wastes for reuse (known as resource recovery), and the conversion of certain types of waste into useful energy such as heat, electricity, and hot water are strategies which recover and offset costs for overall waste management.
• Treatment – When wastes cannot be prevented or minimized through reuse or recycling, then we need to pursue strategies aimed at reducing volumes and/or toxicity. Treatment technologies are processes that focus on stabilization of wastes, reducing toxicity, reducing volume before ultimate disposal, or in some cases creating limited-use by-products Disposal – The only other strategy available is disposal. Waste disposal practices are integrated into the environmental management strategies of all municipalities, are integral to most manufacturing operations, and quite often are among the highest direct cost components. From a business standpoint, it is the least desirable strategy and one that can be directly addressed by waste minimization and P2 practices.

The Ditch Magnet Removing metal particles from the drilling mud that the shale shaker will not get. This unit will capture all metals having magnetic attraction and hold them until they can be removed from the mud stream. The Magnet is particularly valuable during milling operations. Removal of mill cuttings and debris reduces wear of mud pumps and other equipment, as well as eliminating problems caused by the return downhole of harmful debris. They are equally effective during washover and fishing jobs.

Construction of GN Ditch Magnet

Ditch magnet consists of a main body and a fixed support which are all made of stainless steel. The main body is composed of two layers, both top and bottom surfaces of each layer can adsorb scrap iron. The main body is made of imported magnet with the highest absorbability, which feathers high absorbability, large adsorption area and long service life. The installation method is: hang the fixed supports at the two sides of the ditch magnet to the mud with four 800 mm stainless steel chains.

The 36-inch long Magnet weighs only 90 pounds and will hold in suspension as much as half this weight of mill cuttings. The design is clean; eliminating trays, gates and other auxiliary equipment. The magnet is encased in stainless steel and has integral handles at each end for lifting.

Bowen  Ditch Magnet Operation:

No special instructions are required to operate the Bowen Ditch Magnet. It is most effective when suspended by soft line in the mud ditch. It may also be suspended by soft line in the shaker discharge. The unit should be cleaned several times per day, depending on milling rate. Just remove the Magnet and clean with fresh or salt water hose. Wipe all cuttings from the unit and return it to duty. Below is an e-mail I sent to a supplier in Australia but after checking you web site and the equipment is required in Mongolia it may be more economical to deal with a supplier in China.

Project – 18 x 400m x 444m water production wells.
Mud Pumping Rate – App 800 Gal/ min

Required –Drilling Mud treatment/mixing system/ with some type on insulation
The attached give you a bit of an idea of what we are running now, the system was set up for 9 7/8 in holes and just won’t handle the volume required for 17.

Container is insulated and we use the heat from the engine / generator to keep the  container warm, we don’t run any additional heating as long as we can keep the temp above -5 deg C all Ok.

Pumps are all set up in insulated containers and the heat from the engine is enough.

My initial thoughts would be a something similar to what we have now but set up in a 40ft container in place of a 20ft container. The tank with the shale shaker on top would be a total height of app 2.4m so we could transport with out dismantling and place a cut down 40 ft container with no bottom on top to enclose the unit similar to what we do with the 20ft set up. The tank would be app 3 /4 of the internal length of the container so the crew could open the doors at the end to store mud ready for mixing. The top section (we can manufacture) would have internal light fitted.
